I started the blog to document by journey with Internet marketing. I know that there are a lot of people that do this, and do it way better than I do.

And I haven't posted to this blog in quite some time, because I guess that on one hand I had become disheartened. But at the same time I was still trying, and was busy doing that.

But my point here, is how funny this mistress is. I know of one person that started this journey about the same time that I did. We probably know some of the same information, posted web pages on the same free sites etc.

And how their choices cause them to succeed, and your choices take you the opposite direction. It's amazing how one simple choice like picking one keyword over another can make a difference between success and failure.

Oh well, it's all a learning experience. The point is to never give up, your rainbow may be just around the corner.

Building Backlinks - Problems

When I started this blog a few years ago. I read and learned that the main ways to build backlinks to your site was: post comments on other blogs, post comments on forums, write articles etc.

Today, these methods work less then before. Most blogs have "nofollow" tags on your comment links, articles if used on another site doesn't give your site any juice and you may have to worry about the duplicate contact penalty (maybe against your site). And as I believe I have mentioned before a number of site just post a snippet of your article with a link back to the original article directory where they got it from.

So what do you do? New way to build links back to your site come out everyday but don't work for long.

So if anyone knows of a good way to build backlinks, let me know!!!

Tracking--Are You Tracking Your Visitors

I'm sure, that you have heard that you should track your visitors on your website. What pages they view and what links they click etc.

So I started to do this lately and to my surprise, I found out that a percentage of my visitors did not leave a trace of what pages they were on.

Now I know you are asking yourself, then how did you know they were there? Because I am also tracking most of my links and they were getting clicked. And then I remembered talk about link theft and cloaking our affiliate links and how many sales were lost to this.

But when you think about it, how many affiliate sales are lost because of a visitor having their browser set so that cookies are off.

There are a lot of scripts out there to help with this, but I haven't found any that have worked. So if you read this post and know of one that works and is simple to install leave a comment.

Ping Your Blog--After 1 Month

Well it has been over a month now that I set up a test blog. And all I did to promote it was to ping it through one of the many ping services.

Now I have read two different methods on pinging your blog, I still don't know which one is collect. The first was to just use a ping service and ping your blog after each post. The other was to join each site that the ping site had listed on its page, an example of this would be Technorati.com. So I picked one, joined the site and listed my blog with them.

After trying both methods to drive traffic to my blog, I have found that neither one worked. So I did some searching and read that your blog ping stays on sites like Technorati main page for about 15 sec. Now I don't know how true that is, but if it is then the next way someone may find you is by doing a keyword search.

So lets take the keyword stock market and the search results are 165,343 for stock market. So what are the odds of more than a few people finding you.

Ping Your Blog

Well I have been posting every day to the other blog I set up as a test. Each day of the 14 days I have used one of the service like Ping-o-Matic to ping the blog.

As of today I haven't seen any traffic to the blog. I have pinged using just my blog address. And other time I also added the rss feed address.

I don't even think that this blog is even on the radar, but I will continue to post and ping for the next 17 days to see what happens.

Do You Ping Your Blog?

When I first started this blog, I heard that you should ping the blog using a service like Ping-O-Matic. And the reason was two fold; first you let the world know about your blog post and second was that it was suppose to bring some targeted traffic to your site.

Well I don't know, if I have been doing it right but I have ping my blog almost every time I have had a new post. And to tell you the truth, I don't thing it has helped me in any way. My blog traffic isn't beating my door down, as you can see I have a few product on the side and there hasn't been one sale from the traffic that I have had.

So my big question is; is it worth the time to ping your blog?

Does Fresh Content thru RSS Bring Traffic

When I started this blog about 2 1/2 years ago, I came across this article about using rss feeds to generate fresh content for your website. At the time I hadn't heard or seen much about using rss this way.

The article talked about fresh content, high PR, more traffic and so on. How rss would update your content daily, bring the search engines to your site more and thus bring more traffic.

So I was able to find a script to add rss and waited for the traffic to flood my site. In the six months I had this script on my site, I didn't receive any traffic.

But now, you hear a lot about using rss on your site for fresh content, even blogger now has a widget to add rss to your blog. My question is, if it didn't bring me any traffic a few years ago, how is it going to work now when everyone is trying it?

So I have started a new blog and I am not going to ping it or promote it in any way. I am just going to post and have an rss feed on it. Let's see what happens!!!

Affiliate Internet Marketing Warning

Affiliate Internet Marketing is a popular way to start marketing on the Internet. But one of the mistakes that I find myself doing that maybe you are doing too, is having your hand in to many cookie jars at one time. You get caught up in the making money thing that you forget to make a plan.

My hand in to many cookie jars moment was, after building 20+ sites I still wasn't making any money. Some how I had gotten the idea into my head that if I seeded the Internet with 100's of site someone would come. And with as many people trying affiliate Internet marketing each day I was fooling myself.

So remember to make a plan and stick to it: find a good niche, product etc. and work on getting lots of traffic to that site. Then move on to the next project or you will end up like me scratching your head, feeling overwhelmed without a product sale in sight.

Remember spinning your wheel in one place gets you nowhere fast.
So work on your web traffic, because traffic is the key.

Getting Traffic with Social Bookmarking

Well if you haven't heard about social bookmarking and using it to get targeted website traffic, plus getting your site indexed faster, then you may want to learn more about it.

I tried social bookmarking about 2 months ago to see if I could increase traffic to my website. And I was surprised that after a few hours I started to see more traffic. Now the increase lasted for about 3 weeks, then slowly decreased to the amount of traffic I had before bookmarking the site.

Now the downside is (depending on how many accounts you sign up for) it takes time to set-up. Then posting to each of the accounts will take more time unless you use a site like onlywire etc.

Now the upside is:

*your site is possibly indexed faster
*you are building one-way links back to your site
*if other's pick up your links then it may help with PR
*burst of targeted traffic to your site
and more...

So is social bookmarking going to help you get more web traffic? Yes for a time, but like any else you will have to work at it. Make social friends, pass on your links and keep working to promote your site.

Traffic thru Article Marketing!

Well from what I have read, one of the best ways to drive traffic, while building one-way links back to your site is through article marketing. Now since the whole idea of having a website and trying to sell a product online is to make a sale. But without traffic, what good is your site.

Since article marketing is one way to drive traffic to your site, I started writing. (Also because I am tired of the only traffic to my site is: that's right me).

So I set up a test page, because I want to see how well this works. I wrote a few articles and waited for the traffic storm to begin. After a few days I checked my stat counter and guess what, a few hits but not the numbers that I thought I would have.

Now the way that I understand it is, you write an article, submit it to a directory and then someone re-prints your article on their site with your link intact.

But what I found out, was the article marketing game has changed. Instead of my article with an intact link back to my site, I found a snippet of the article and the link was back to the article directory where I had posted the original.

So does this work? Only time will tell.

Traffic Is Everything!!!

Well I have been at this Internet thing for about a year and a half. And I have tried a little of everything, mostly in the affiliate marketing area. Heard everything from it's all in the list to find great keywords to SEO. And the one thing that I feel really counts is traffic. Without traffic all of the above, well does nothing. Because no matter how good your site is, if the traffic isn't there.

Who sees the site?

So how do you get traffic? Well that is the million dollar question, but getting links back to your site is a big part of the puzzle. So I have started submitting articles, listing my site to web directories etc. And there is always the PPC thing but being on a limited budget buying click is out of the question.

But on a good note have made a few sales.

Pop-up, Pop-up Everywhere I See Pop-ups

Have you notice that just about every site you visit there is a pop-up! If it isn't in your face when you arrive, then you get a pop-up when you try to exit. Now I have to admit that I have used them on my site, but not any more. I just found this new script. It's not a pop-up, but what is called a peel-away.

This script is great, it isn't in your face, just check the top right corner of this blog. Just mouse over the corner to see how it works, then head over to their site (they have a $10 discount on their page right now). You'll want to check it out as soon as possible, they may raise the price in the future.

A Different Resource that may help you with your business

I have a different resource that may help you with your online Internet marketing business. I know the you have heard of or maybe seen some of the videos posted here. This resource is You Tube, and if you are having trouble with Internet marketing, affiliate programs, AdSense etc. this is a good place to go.

Why you ask? Because as the web moves into web 2.0 everyone is posting videos and most if not all the gurus have one or more videos on You Tube. Another reason I have started looking on You Tube to answer questions I may have, is it is easier & faster to watch videos then it is to read about how to fix the problem I maybe having.

Is AdSense on every page of your site necessary?

Well it's been a while since I last posted something. Now I know I'm not a guru and there are a lot of experts on AdSense. But does it make since to have AdSense on every page and is it a good idea to do this?

What got me thinking about this is, I was looking at a catalog I got in the mail you know the ones fulled with low priced products. Well the one I was looking at had these detox patches for the feet and I had never seen anything like this before. So I hit Google and did a search on detox patches for feet.

I clicked on the first site which was a good looking site. It had good graphic, good layout, was nice and clean with a good sales page. You can tell some thought went into it, with some good brief information on it and best of all a buy button mid-way on the page (because don't you just hate some of the sales pages that seem to never end. I know I do because after 5-10 minutes of reading I ready to move on).

Well to get to the point they are selling detox patches and the Google AdSense ads they have on that page are promoting other peoples detox patches. Now I don't know about you, but why would you want to give someone the opportunity to leave your page, possibly losing the sale just to make a few dollars from AdSense. But I guess the thought is if I can't get them one way, make a little the other way.

Do You Have a Enough Traffic

Well now that I know that traffic exchange sites are not going to bring in the traffic, or sales. I need to move on to more constructive things to get traffic.

So I found a few things which may help with the task of bring some traffic your way. First is Instant Article Wizard (EARLIER POST BELOW) and the other is a Directory Submitter (IN THE SIDE BAR).

Also I found this post on the Warrior Forum 50 Traffic Tips, stop by and take a read.

And I wanted to add tip #51. Lay out a plan on how you are going to promote your site. Example:

Monday submit articles.
Tuesday submit to directories.
Wednesday post on forums.

And so on, and here is the part that make this tip work (no matter what your plan is) spend at least 10 minutes a day, working your plan.

Are Traffic Exchange Site Worth It

Well my testing of 4 traffic exchange sites is now done. I spent over 5 hrs. looking at other peoples sites (time that I could have spent writing an article), I had my spyware software, alert me 6 different times to sites that were know for spyware.

I had over 1000 views, no sales and one opt-in. So is the traffic that you get from these sites worth it, I think not! It is low quality traffic. And I think that the risk of getting a virus or keylogger etc. is too high. For when you are trying to start or run an on-line business, having an infected computer is the last thing you need.

I think that I will continue to use the older method of getting traffic. Writing articles, submitting to site directories, posting to other blogs and trying to get one-way links.

I have Traffic, but is it the Right Traffic?

Well after six days of using a few traffic exchange sites, I have had over 300 hits. Maybe 50 to 75 hits of this traffic has been repeat visitors. I have been testing five different pages over these six days(one of which is an opt-in page) and not one has produced any results other than being viewed.

Not one sale, AdSense click or opt-in. I have spent over four hours viewing other sites, and that is time I could have spent promoting my pages by some other means.

But I may keep doing this till I hit 1000 hits, just to give it a good try.

The Traffic War Continues

It's day two of using traffic generating sites, I have spent 2-3 hrs looking at other peoples sites to earn point so the same can happen for me.

Checking today's stats and a little over 100 people have been to my home page and still there hasn't been anyone go pass that page. But I did just see a great idea to try with this traffic site, will have to get a new page put together and test it.

Traffic, Traffic, Traffic, Who's got the Traffic

Well, I got my hands on an old program used to automate viewing for traffic generating sites. You know the ones where you sign up and sit and look at other peoples sites and earn points. And in return others do the same, main purpose is to drive targeted traffic to your site.

I figured that I could sit there, the software would do the work and move me to the next page, so that I didn't have to have my hand on the mouse and clicking every 20 to 30 sec. I know I'm lazy!

Now I know that these programs were used by some to cheat the system, but I want to look at the websites, because you never know when you'll see something that you can use or give you your next niche idea.

So I went to 5 of these traffic site and in the terms; I found out that you can't use these kinds of software. So after signing up, I wanted to see if the traffic that I earned from these traffic sites would produce some kind of action.

One hour later,a sore wrist and clicking finger, I checked my stats. And I had 56 visitors to my site and can you guess what happened? What's right the traffic that I got was the same traffic other's had gotten from me 20 to 30 seconds on the home page and nothing more.

But it's a little early to tell if this is a waste of time or maybe a sale or two.

How many of you sell affiliate products on your website? Well, I have a few affiliate products on my site and I just learned an important lesson. I have never bothered to check these links. So I started clicking my affiliate links last week and to my surprise not all were active.

Two of the affiliate products were not being sold anymore. And one other was using PayPal, so anyone I had sent there didn't get credited as a sale for me. Which is a little disappointing when you sit down and think about how much time it took to get traffic to my site (as little as it is.

So if you don't check your affiliate links on a regular basis, learn from my mistake and start checking, so you don't lose a sale!

Web Site SEO--How are you ranking?

Yesterday I talked about site promotion: how is your traffic. And today I came across this site http://coolestguyontheplanet.org/ which was set-up by Jonathan Leger.

Here he shows you how he got this site list at Google and is ranked #9. But what is more important is that he explains how he has gone about it. On the progress page it shows that the site went on-line Wednesday, April 18th, 2007.

Within it's pages he explains that it's all done over time (like I was saying yesterday by promoting 10 minutes a day). Another thing that caught my eye is he uses a product that I have mentioned in a past post and it's called: SEO Elite.

Site Promotion How is Your Traffic

Well I haven't posted in some time. Trying to redo my site and do some reading on how to get more traffic. I don't care what everyone says, but it comes down to traffic and how much you are getting to your website.

It doesn't matter how good your product is, how much time you spend on keyword research, SEO or list-building etc. If you don't have traffic at your site, you are not going to have any sales or people signing up for your newsletter.

Now we all have read or heard about writing articles, PPC, finding good one way links and listing your site using search engine submitters, plus listing to directories. All of which I have tried! I have listed at about 300 directories, submitted an article or two and looked for links. And still the traffic to my site is close to null.

Now I have done all of this, but not on a regular basis. Till I read this article and it said something like this: If you want traffic to your web site then you need to make a list of places you are going to list your site at.

Example of places: directories, forums, article sites etc. Then this article said the most profound thing which was "spend 10 minutes to an hour a day promoting your site." And this is what I wasn't doing, I wasn't spenting 10 minutes to an hour a day promoting my site.

I guess I'll be spending 10 minutes a day so that the rest falls into place.

It's All In The List

I know that if you have been trying to make a living on the Internet for any amount of time. Then you have heard the saying It's All In The List. As true as that may statement may be, it seems to me that a better statement would be It's all in your list and the list of the people that you know.

As I have mentioned before I receive a few newsletters and you would be amazed at just how many of the emails, will talk about a new product that someone has come up with. These JV's must run in the millions, because you hear about some people with list of 100,000 or more. So I guess you can see the power of It's All In the List!

But how do you start your list? Some say the best way is to make a 5 day mini course. But if you are like me, I just sit here thinking about what I would use after that. I mean, from some of the newsletters I get are sent everyday and others every other day. But if I ever figure it out I'll post it.

What Site Promotion I Have Done

Well back to posting about my journey. On Friday, November 17, 2006 I talked about what I was doing for site promotion of Bob's Info World. Well to recap I found this free software Web Ceo (the link is in that post) to help me do the seo thing. It has a feature that can tell you about weak areas in your site. So after using this software to find weak spots, I decided to try some of the things I have been reading about to get my site promoted. And maybe make a little money from the AdSense and affiliate products I put on the site.

Now if you go by Google's page-rank system (if you use Google's toolbar) even on this blog, I have a zero. You would thing that I would promote this blog first and trickle it down to my other site. But I wanted to see if I could start making an income from that site.

So first I started listing my site with open directories. (A few directory links are listed in the link area on the rights side and a great resource in Sunday, November 19, 2006 post.) Well after listing my site at about 300 directories, not much happened. Either I was rejected or who knows what happened, because I have only received a handful of links back to my site. I check my link popularity using a site call www.mj99.com/tools/. There are a lot of sites that have link popularity checker.

So next I tried my hand at writing an article and posting it at free article directories. Well this is a time consuming project and the rules that each site has, well lets say more time please!

So if you are going to write an article for the purpose of site promotion, then these general rule may help. Make your article about 500 words long, because most site want between 350 and 1000 words. The average line length is 65 characters, but some site are longer. And its best to write your article using notepad.

Remember most sites do not allow links in the body of the article. So to promote your site you have to put the links in the author area. And the amount of link run from one to three. Then there is the question if they let you use html or strip it out. This is the difference between a text link or just www.yoursite.com.

So create a page with a few different author bio's, some with two links and some with three links plus a few using www.yoursite.com to save you time. It's then just a matter of cut and paste.

Adwords Made Easy

I came a crossed this e-book some time ago. I just read it again and thought I would share it. It has some very good keyword ideas. It talks about keyword searches, setting up your Google Adwords account etc. It's written by Brad Callen so it talks about his software Keyword Elite. But still has some very good keyword advice.

Your Anchor Link Strategy

So where was I, when the memo came out about an anchor linking strategy? Now remember I am new to this scene. But what I had learned was pick your keywords. Then pick the one keyword that best fits your site. Which would be your main keyword, this is the keyword or phase that you use as a text anchor link.

Now build your back-links using this anchor text (keyword) link along with your brief description. Now I sure that a percentage of you already know this, but it's a first for me!

Now you take say your top 5 keywords and write a brief description for each of them. Start submitting your anchor text links rotating after every 25-30 submissions.

Back to the Home Based Business Journey! Part 2

The other day I was talking about getting my site indexed and getting started with promoting it. Here are a few things I have read and done to promote my site: written an article; I'm not a writer, so I am looking for a software that can help me with that, plus ones that can help me submit them. I have posted in a few forums, I laugh about it now, but the first time I forgot to put my site address at the end of my post!

Site SEO is a place that is something we really need to look at. There are so many aspects to SEO. From using your most important keyword in your domain name to building one-way links and finding who your competition is linked to and trying to get a text link there too. Plus so much more. I didn't know about using a keyword in my domain, but I tried to pick one that was easy to remember.

Remember trying to optimize your site is a trial and error thing; change something and test it, make a change again etc.

Some basics I have learned from reading are:
Good strong keywords, using your most popular one in your domain, meta description and in the meta tag. Use the H1 and H2 tags. Don't over populate your page with keywords. Keep keyword density between 3 and 6 percent.
With images make sure to use the ALT tag and use a keyword there.
Try not to use stop words in your title etc. Stop words are: and, on, with etc.
Build backlinks from other sites in the form of a text link example: best diet book.
I have tried to get one way links by adding my site to open directories ones that have a Google PR of 4 or higher.

There are all kinds of site out there to find info about SEO. There are three newsletter that I like. One comes from Brad Fallen, the next comes from Brad Callen and the last is AbotDirectory.com just hit free links in my links area.

Another thing you need to do is offer a newsletter, because it's all in the list. This keeps you in contact with people and it will bring them back to your site over and over. Most important if you are offering products.

Back to the Home Based Business Journey! Part 1

So on with the journey for a home base business. Now I have decided to go with a content site, using AdSense to see if I could make an income this way. This being my first attempt, I found a list of the most 100 searched keywords. I pick a theme for the site and picked 7 of these keywords that seemed to fit together. Now most people say, use just one subject per site, or start a mini-site, but with funds being limited I thought 7 subject would be that much better.

Now I thought that build-it and they will come, is all I had to do. A month of looking for content and putting the site together. Boy was I wrong! I knew I had to use my keywords in my meta tag and site description! But I didn't know about trying to use my main keyword in the domain name too. But that is just the beginning!
And now I have learned there is so much more to getting people to your site. Most of it I think has to do with search engine optimization, both on and off your-site.

Some say build your site and get up on-line and make changes as you go, reason for this is it may take some time for the search engines spiders to find your new site. So here is what I have learned so far.

Site layout needs to be neat, easy to use, simple and not overwhelming. To much information on a page can send people running, but not enough and you lose them too. You have to pike their interest. If you are using AdSense on your site, go to Google to see good ad placement. Have friends read and comment on your site.

When picking your keywords don't use the top ranking keywords, use lesser words that match your site. Reason: less competition; it harder to beat sites that have been on the web longer.

Don't submit to the search engine! It doesn't help anymore, I don't know how true this is, but I came across this statement a few times. Instead submit your site to open directories or online directories. This builds one-way links back to your site. Do a few a week not all at once.

I got a newsletter last week, and it suggested using the most recent keyword list to help find a new niche market. There are a lot of programs to help you with keyword lists and keyword research. A few maybe able to show you a list of the most recent keyword searches done on the Internet in the last 48 hours or over the last 30 days.

Clueless about Opt-in Lists

As I have posted before I am a subscriber to a few newsletters. One of them comes from an Internet marketer called Michael Cheney.

If you remember I talked about a new product, that had evolved from the use of the Butterfly Marketing Manuscript a website called Butterfly Riches. Mr Cheney is one of the featured marketers on the site.

Well Mr. Cheney asked his subscribers how he could help them to success online. And this is an area in which I'm at a lose, being new to this whole Internet marketing thing. In reality I'm at a lose to every aspect of the home based business/Internet marketing thing.

And if you are trying to learn this stuff, like I am then you have see the phase; "It's all in the list!" Or something close to that.

Internet Business Models

From my search for a good online business, I have become aware that there are three main internet business models (maybe more but these are the ones I have noticed).

The first one (and this one seem to be growing) is the Membership Site Model. These sites can charge anywhere from $10 to $1000 a month. And for what you ask? Well this may range from tutorials, on going training, software or informational ebooks. With new quality content added each month.

The second is the Affiliate Model. The advantage of this model unlike the above model is that you don't have to create new products or content each month. You just have to come up with a creative way to get people to stop at the product landing page.

And if you find the right affiliate product to sell the owner of the product will already have a line of promotional tools to help you. If you pick a product that doesn't have these tools, then you will have to sit down with pen/paper and create your own unique sales tools.

The third is the eBay Power-seller/Super Store Model.
With this model you have to decide what you are going to sell, are you going to stock physical products or do the drop-ship thing.
How are you going to accept payment? Through Pay-Pal or take it one step further and go for a merchants account.

There are pro's and con's to each internet business model above. But first don't rush in to any home based business. There are a lot of people who want to sell you the perfect home based business and in many cases they are not using the information themselves.

Second remember that 90% of the time, you are not going to go from zero to millionaire in 15 mins to 45 days. If you really work at your business you may start to see some modest income in 4-6 months.

Third is don't quit to soon. It seem that we want things to happen right now or we quit. It may just be that you have to make minor changes to your plan. Changing then testing, learning from the effects of your changes. Then repeat!!!

Fourth thing is learn from the mistakes of others and from yourself. Don't be the dog chasing it's tail. Stay away from things that could get your site banded.

And if things are still not going your way. Go back to the basics, create new content, attract visitors through using new keywords, SEO and promotion.

Home Internet Business - 5 Mistakes to Avoid at Startup

Starting your own home Internet business can be an exciting thing. Dreams of independence, being your own boss, walking 20 feet to your office, early retirement, and telling your boss where he can 'place' that weekly report is appealing to most everyone.

Unfortunately it's not all glitz and glamour and at some point the dream loses much of its luster. This usually happens around the time one realizes that running an Internet business from the 'comfort of your home' is really a lot of work, that home is not as comfortable as its cracked up to be, and that retirement is still light-years away.

Even so, running your own Internet Business is still one of the best things since sliced bread and bad clichés. In this article I've listed some initial mistakes that many Internet novices tend to make and how to avoid them. "The smoothest road to success is the one without the potholes we create for ourselves." A famous person probably already said that. If not, then somebody alert Bartlett!

1. Don't Plan to Run Your Internet Business on the Family Computer.

This is a huge mistake that's made more often than you might think. In true capitalist fashion, many newbies figure they can save a buck or two by using the family computer instead of purchasing one of their own. Believe me, you don't want to go there.

If you have any doubts, simply picture what it would be like to have your 4-year old son pounding on the keys of the computer at your office or your obnoxious brother-in-law sloshing beer all over your desk while he surfs porn sites. Think your superiors would approve? Think you'd get much work done? Getting the picture?

If you want to run a successful Internet business, it is imperative that you work from your own computer that you have absolute control over.

2. Don't Plan to Set Up Your Home Office on the Kitchen Table.

I don't know about you, but my kitchen is like Grand Central Station nearly 24 hours a day. Yes, the kitchen table can make a nice substitute for a computer desk in a pinch, but I would not want to work there on a continual basis. There is simply too much distraction in your kitchen, or for that matter, any other main living area of your home.

What you need is a quiet place that you can get away from the daily ruckus, where you can spread out and concentrate on the tasks at hand. Ideally, you'll want to be in a room with four walls and a door, preferably one with a lock on it. If you don't have a spare bedroom, den, study, what have you, then at least find a nice corner of your home where you can have some occasional privacy. If you have to retreat to a corner in your basement, then do it.

You should have space and services for your computer, a phone, and a fax machine at a minimum. You should also seriously consider a printer, scanner and copier just to cover all the bases. Some of the all-in-one inkjet printers on the market today serve this purpose splendidly. Oh, and unless you enjoy sitting on a folding chair or milk crates, I suggest you find a comfortable, ergonomic, office chair. Your back and backside will love you for it.

3. Don't Plan to Use a Free Web Host.

I'm going to keep this one short and sweet. Free web sites in a nutshell:

a) Unprofessional

b) Annoying advertising pop-ups and banners

c) Typically unreliable

d) The web host can pull the rug out from under you at any time and without warning.

If you can't rely on your web site, then your customers cannot rely on you. It's as simple as that.

4. Lose the 'Build it and They Will Come' Mindset.

This is probably the mistake most often made by Internet marketing novices. Due in large part to the scams and get rich quick schemes posted all over the Web, folks think that all they have to do is build a good looking professional web site, slap a bunch of affiliate links on it, sit back and watch the money roll in. Sorry, not happening in this lifetime.

Establishing your domain and building your web site is the easy part. The marketing is an ongoing and time-consuming venture that literally makes or breaks your business. If people don't know you're there, then you're not going to make any money. Initially, plan to spend most of your time optimizing your pages for the search engines, establishing back links, writing articles, generating customer lists, adding daily content to your site(s), etc. and so on. You get out of it what you put into it.

5. Don't Quit Your Day Job.

This last item ties in more-or-less with the previous topic. Don't expect success overnight. Even if you could magically establish loads of pertinent back links, submit 20 articles a day, and optimize the white space out of your web pages all within a couple of weeks, don't expect any noticeable results for at least another 3 or 4 months. Why? Because Google runs the show.

It does not matter how good you are, how good your product is, or how well your web site is optimized for the search engines. Google WILL plant your butt firmly in its 'sandbox' for at least 3 months before deeming your site worthy enough to be listed anywhere near the top of its search results. The existence of this 'sandbox' cannot be confirmed, but the 'sandbox effect' is very much alive and kicking.

Even after your web site starts appearing in the search engines, establishing a good customer base and web presence will take even longer. In short, regardless of whether it's Google, MSN or Yahoo calling the shots, it's going to take some time before you start to see that first trickle of income from your web site. It will build in time, but you have to be patient and stick with it.

If you're serious about starting an Internet Business, then 'seriously' start an Internet business. Prepare appropriately and realistically and plan to put some work into it. Oh, and if you really just can't wait to give your boss those 'very specific directions', you may want to plan your time evenly between the unemployment line and your budding Internet career.

Do You Have A Disclaimer for Your Website

Now as I look around at other people's websites; I have noticed that on most, there is some kind of disclaimer statement. This is a great idea if you are selling products as an affiliate.

It's just a good idea to have one on your site it you are selling a product. I posted an article early in the year that talked about having a disclaimer statement. The next opportunity, I found while setting up the Easy Street Mall; one of my first attempts at a home based business. I had read a few things about the Affiliate Cash Vault, so I decided to buy it. Find a Niche

So you just found out that your idea for a niche is over populated. And you don’t know where to go from here. First thing is to brainstorm to find another niche and remember to keep an open mind. So grab a pen and paper and just look around your house because any of the things you’re looking at right now could be a niche item (remember to always carry a pen and paper with you, because ideas are all around you).
Another source to find a niche idea is to read random blogs, because they provide fresh, timely information. Forums are another place to find ideas for a niche market.

After you find a niche say “Bass Fishing” search Google for “Bass Fishing Forums” and “Bass Fishing Blogs”. Now if your asking yourself why checkout these places? The answer is because you may find a problem people are having or sub-niches like bass fishing lures.

Next step is a two-part process: one is building a keyword list and the other is where you check to see if your niche is over populated. There are a few places to build keyword list one of the most popular is wordtracker.com but I use this free one, goodkeywords.com. So let’s check to see if you have a good niche market.

Using our above example of bass fishing lures and plugging it into our keyword program, we will get up to 100 keywords and phases. Next we do a search of Google for these keywords using our example of “bass fishing lures” which gives us a result of 50,400. Some of the top affiliates say a good niche market is:

Rosalind Gardner (Super Affiliate Handbook) doesn’t consider anything under 100,000 competing sites to be a viable niche.

Jimmy D. Brown suggests ideal competing sites to be 30,000 to 100,000.

Andrew Williams thinks a good niche is 1000 or less.

I have been using Jimmy Brown 30,000 to 100,000 to try and find a good niche market.

Then I take 50,400 (Google search result) and divide it by 3362 (keyword search result for the month) this gives us a 15 and the lower this number is means that we probably have a viable niche market. After running all the keywords take the lowest ranking and see if you can find products for that niche keyword.

Side Note to Walking the Affiliate Highway

1) Join internet forums that deal with topics about affiliate selling, affiliate marketing etc. By browsing topics on these affiliate forums, you will learn which products people are selling, problems people are having (you may have a product or you can find a product that will help them) and other ideas that may help you. Remember others have made mistakes and if you can learn from these mistakes,then you are one step closer to success.

2) Like the Forex market, I have read that 90% of affiliates make little or no money. This may be true but don't let this stop you from trying. Just don't jump into affiliate marketing with your eyes closed. Learn everything you can, find a good niche market, fill the need with a product.

3) You will also hear that you should start off with niches that you know something about. A hobby or something you are very interested in. If this is where you choose to start research to make sure that this niche isn't over saturated.

4) Multiple streams of income is another subject you will hear a lot about. This is a great idea. But a word of advice when you are first starting out, work on one source at a time and get it set up so that it is on auto-pilot. Before move on to the next income source. Or you will have a lot of nothing making a lot of nothing.
That is what I found myself doing with all the products I found on Clickbank and the excitement of starting an online business. Along with reading all the hype of making $$$ a month.

Walking Down The Affiliate Highway!

First I read some articles that said the best thing is selling your own products. Well I don’t have a product and I don’t know what product would sell anyway. You can buy products with resell rights. Just do a Google search on products + resell rights or resell etc. But what do I know about setting up a site to take payments from people. So moving on.

Then almost everything else I read pointed me to Clickbank. What is Clickbank? I would describe it as an affiliate warehouse. A place where people who want product to sell, met people who have products to sell and Clickbank takes care of the payment part. Well this sounded like the answer to all my problems. But Clickbank has over 10,000 different products. Now which one to sell? The question here is 10,000 products and how many people use Clickbank and how many are selling that product you pick. Because you don’t what to pick a product that everyone is selling. On the other hand you don’t want to pick a product that has a bad sales page, which insures that you will be wasting your time and money.

So I looked through Clickbank’s categories and with my mind-set still thinking e-store, I found three possibilities. The first was call CB Mall , the second was 1stPromotion and the third was Dave’s Cool Little Website. All three sell everything listed at Clickbank.

Now all are about the same, so money being a factor I went with 1stPromotion. Now the problem, is that I didn’t and don’t know how to promote this store. So I used an adwords campaign, and I have had about one hundred people go to the mall. And what I have learned is that the one stop shopping doesn’t work for me. You need to find a more targeted product to go to a targeted buyer.

Side note: using adwords to try to target a lot of buyers for a lot of products, is a waste of money. Out of one hundred people there were zero sales. So lets do the math, that is $10 spent and zero sales. For most product if you sale one thing you will make say $25. So if I spend $25 or more and make one sale I’m losing money. The mall is still up and running just have to find a better way to advertise. Get more people there!

All these malls are great! And I have read some very good things about
Dave’s Cool Little Website. But it’s a numbers game.

An Important Tool For Your Business

I feel that this will be one of the most important tools, which you will use in what every home based business opportunity you decide to venture into. The reason I believe this is because so far in my journey, I have signed up for a lot of things. From forums, newsletters, email accounts and a few different programs.

And every time I go to one of these sites I have to enter the web address log in page, enter my user name and password. Now the problem is that at some point, it begins to become a problem trying to remember everything. I started writing them all down, but having to look up this information every time I want to go to one of these site started to take up more and more time.

Now I sure that you could find a few free programs, but this is the best program I found. They have a free program in which you can store ten sites with password etc., but buy the full program when you get pass ten sites.

The reason I like this program is, it stores the web address, user name and password for that site. Then after that all you have to do is find the site in the pull down menu, and it brings you to the log in page and signs you in. The other reason I like this software is that it has a password generator. Which will give you strong passwords.

This software is Roboform . Give the free software a try. It will make your life a whole lot easier.

So What’s Next: The Big Read

So I stepped back for a moment! I had spent a little more that $25 to take on the last business opportunity. And remember I am on a budget. And with each attempt you get a little more cautious. On my search I came across quite a few e-books that said that they could make me this or that. And I have read a few articles about quite a few people that have bought all kinds of e-books. And yes, more than half were worthless.

I started reading and researching other business opportunities that looked good and pass on a few that were good opportunities. Because I didn't have the funds to get started.

Here are some of the business opportunities I looked at.

*I looked at finding drop shippers and opening an e-store using Yahoo's web hosting.
*Then there was that vitamin web site, but I'm not very good when it come to talking to people. Asking them to go check out my site.
*I even looked at a few companies that you buy the product and they help you get a down-line.
*Everyone's know about the E-bay thing but, from what I hear you have to know what to sell.
*Now this one looked good, I have read some reviews on it, I may come back to it when I can afford to. It called Plug in profit.

Next I checked into some of the stock market software companies that you see on the television and into the forex market. Which looks like a great way to make a living. But is really risky (a lot to learn). They say that 90% of the people investing in the forex lose their money. So moving on!

One day, I came across this article about selling your own products like e-books etc. Farther down in the article it talked about affiliate programs. And just like that, the light bulb came on. Sell other peoples products. I put everything else on hold and started down this road.

Next I'll talk about my walk down the affiliate highway.

My Next Adventure: On With the Quest

I started searching the web again. Looking at this business and that business. One day I got this email, from one of the newsletters I had joined. It talked about the newest business on the web, and just a few people knew about it and how it worked.
Well I went to the website and read the half-hour sales page (why is it that these sales pages have to be so long? It’s like they say the same thing in three different places, mixed in with some testimonies all on the same page.)

Did the review thing. Found a few different prices and went for the more expensive course. Figured it was the best and guess what? It wasn’t! What is this business you are asking yourself? It was trading e-currency.
Now remember the warning signs from a earlier post. Well here are some of them:

1.) Work for as little as 15 minutes a day. (Or in either words spend more time with your family)
2.) Start this business for as little as $25.
3.) No risk of losing your investment.
4.) I think it went like this: watch your money double every week. (Greed factor)

Here is the short story of how it works. You have the main company, and then you have the currency houses (for lack of a better word). You send your money to a currency house then transfer it to the main company. Buy your investment; pull some out on what seems to be credit. Transfer it to a currency house which looks like a loan. Put it back in, pay some fees and around and around and around.

Well the main company’s customer services sucks! How they wanted thing to run and the way they told you, how things were supports to run were too different animals.
And they have changed the rules so many times, that you can’t get your money out.

But I have hope that they will get the system working again!!

On with my search for a home based business opportunity

My first attempt at an online business was an E-store. I was up late one night and one of them 30-minute buy this, came on. And I bought into it hook, line and sinker. And what really got me was the 60-day money back guarantee. I mean the wheels were turning, I could hardy sleep. And when my starter kit got here; I was in heaven. I was going to be the next millionaire. I read all the material that day. Logged on; set up my site with their e-z web builder. And I waited for the sales to roll in.

I waited 10 days, 20 days, 30 days and you guessed it no sales. So I started to talk to the company that sold me this business. Because in the books I was sent, they promised all kinds of things.
To make a long story short, they told me a few ways to get people to my site. It don’t help. Then came the real part of their business “If you would like to up grade to a better site package, our team will set up your site for you. You have your choice of bah bah bah, gold package, bah bah bah.”

I returned all the material got my money back before the 60 days were up. And sat back to look and see if I had learned a lesson!

1.) How is the customer service?
2.) Watch for companies that hook you with one thing, then try to sale you more (better up grades).
3.) Do real business offer money back guarantees? Because think about it, if you are getting a guarantee, then they are selling you a product. Just a thought!!

So you have found a Home Based Business Opportunity

Before you get all caught up in the moment, thinking about how great this opportunity looks. You are going to want to do a little research, before making a big decision. This can be done in a couple of ways.

1.) Look at the Better Business Bureau. They also have an online version where you can go to check on businesses. See if there are complaints.

2.) Next you may want to do a search for reviews on the business opportunity. See how many good or bad reviews are there? Remember to use caution, when using sites that review businesses!
I have come across a few that reviewed the business I was interested in. They gave it two thumbs up, in reality they were the one who owned the business. So see if you can find more than one good or bad review.

3.) Search the forums; there are a lot of them that have subjects talking about companies or products. The postings are from other people who have gotten scammed or the opportunity wasn’t that good etc. But you also want to keep an open mind at the forums too. Because there are some people that post answers and it seems that everything is a scam.

4.) Also when looking into a business opportunity or product look to see if they have a brick and mortar address, phone number and support to handle your questions.

So You Want to Start a Home Based Business!

And you are wondering about take the first step. Like so many others thinking the same thing, you do a Google search on home based business and now you are looking at the results of over 1,300,000,000. Or possible more depending on how you entered your search term.

What do you do now? Well I was sitting in your shoes, two months ago and had been dreaming about starting a home based business for over a year. So I decided to take the plunge and started looking on the subject of different types of home based businesses. And was I surprised at just how many different home base business opportunities there are out there.

Most play on your greed by making statement like make 10,000 a month or six figure a year. Little to no work or just work 30 minutes a day. And on and on and on. Then you have to figure which ones are scams and which are real.

So I decided to keep an online journey showing how I do. That way I can help someone else, who may find these pages. And for the record I not an expert and I never done anything like this in my life.

Now I don’t know how often I will add to this blog. But I will, when I make a change to what I’m doing on my search for a good home based business. And within the next few weeks I will tell you what I've done up till now.

So first things first. Before you get all caught up in the search for your new home based business. You need to step back and take a look at your computer. What I mean by this, is you need to look at how secure your computer is. Just getting on the Internet may allow a virus, spyware or other harmful items to gain access to your computer.
A good example of this; is when we find free downloads, you want to watch where you get them from. Due they post that they are virus and spyware free?

Next let’s start with anti-virus software. Not having a lot of extra money, I used free virus scans. Which don’t stop an attack like having installed software. But I could still scan with them, so I used Panda Software. Their free scan will remove viruses and will tell you if you have spyware. But buying the software is better as it will stop attacks before they get a change to screw up your computer.

As for spyware, I use the one that comes built in to Panda. Then I use a few free ones. That’s just me, I like to cover my bases. But Panda is the one I use the most to check my computer.

Now the one thing you want to remember to do is, put everything you can on auto update. From your computers OS (Windows update), to your spyware. And if they don’t have an auto update, get in the practice of manually updating them on Monday or Friday. Then ran scans! Every week.

1) Keep your OS up-to-date
2) Update your anti-virus software weekly
3) Update your spy-ware weekly
4) Set everything you can on auto pilot
5) Run all the above once a week

What follows is a few tips to help make the relationship less rocky and possibly prosperous!
First of all, we all need to take a little responsibility and at least figure out what we think we need from a web host up front. This isn't always as easy as you might imagine. You don't always know your exact needs ahead of time, and sometimes these things are difficult to foresee. Your site may become hugely popular, requiring more bandwidth or storage than previously thought. You may decide to have data feeds hosted on your site, which will gobble up resources. On online store can do the same. One way I've found myself in the position of having to change web hosts is when a technology you want to use or implement on your site isn't supported by your host. This will (and did!) prompt a move.
Ask friends and associates who they use. While their needs may be somewhat different than yours, basic issues such as support and uptime will be evident, as will customer satisfaction. Check out several of the web hosting directories, as they maintain a wealth of current information regarding the specifics you're interested in. Come armed with a list of things you're looking for and narrow your choices down using this.
Make sure you can grow with this new host. Not only in the size of your current sites, but also number of domains and subdomains you can host there.
